There was much to move before it was to be shampooed and dried. I seriously doubted I could do this alone and yet, after I received an astronomical estimate from a cleaning company, I refused it. I am 77 years of age and have been totally disabled for almost 25 years. I agonized over the decision to purchase the Hoover Smartwash+. If you prefer to skip the cost of professionals and have the patience, you'll have great results on your floors with this carpet cleaner and like others said, it pays for itself after 2 professional cleanings. But then again, I didn't realize just how incredibly dirty my carpet was either, so that was lack of hindsight on my part, certainly not the Hoover eating up cleaning fluid. I did not do this, thinking the sample would be enough for the 2 rooms I planned, and I've used up almost that whole bottle just on the 1 room. This Hoover can be fully rinsed out very, very easily so no stinky, gross, dripping unit to sit in your laundry room. A previous competitor unit I had a few years ago could not be cleaned like that, which was disgusting, and I threw it out after only a couple of uses. Particularly pleasing is to be able to disassemble the head piece and remove the brushes and clear plastic cover to rinse clean. Plus, as I have elderly animals and that room is high traffic anyway, cleaning is needed frequently now and once I clean the next room, this unit will have paid for itself. Yes, I could have had professionals come in and clean that carpet in far, far less time but the wrecked house and inconvenience would have been the same. It pulled up animal stains and ground in dirt in the high traffic area. Fact remains, this Hoover is a really good cleaning machine. I put a fan in the room while I stepped out for dinner and returned to dry carpet, soft and fluffy again under bare feet and no smells, despite knowing in the back of my mind that it really should have been cleaned a second time. It was THAT dirty, but as my house was wrecked from my haphazard clearing of the room for cleaning, I was desperate for a return to order and skipped a second scrub session. Cannister after cannister emptied of filthy black water, even after the water rinse, so I really should have gone over it again for a second scrub or maybe even a third if it was still pulling up filth. I was shocked at how dirty my carpet was. You'll come back to soft, dry, fluffy carpet again. Rinse out the collection unit if needed and reassemble again. Now do a water only rinse, again slow forward and even slower pullback. Rinse out your collection unit as needed and reassemble. Now, with your Hoover loaded and ready, go slow with forward wash, even slower on pullback dry. Vacuum slowly and thoroughly in at least 2 different directions to pull up loose dirt and hair. As multiple reviewers recommended, take the time! Prep your area first. We do not recommend using this carpet shampooer on hard floors. It took a long time to do a 12x13 room but I anticipated this. However, long pile shag carpet can get matted down and twisted by the brushes of any carpet cleaner, so we don't recommend it for shag on a general basis.
